I spoke with researchers and leaders from Google DeepMind, Replit, Cursor, Sourcegraph, MiniMax, and others to get their roadmap for 2026. And you know what they say? The era of the "chatbot" is ending. We are moving toward persistent, multimodal agents that act less like tools and more like employees.
The most radical prediction comes from Steve Yegge: By summer 2026, the Integrated Development Environment (IDE) as we know it will be obsolete. Instead of writing code in an editor, we will manage fleets of agents from a console.
